Blue Tongue Safety Training provides Childcare First Aid training (HLTAID012 – Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting) for schools, childcare centres and education professionals across the Clare Valley, Barossa Valley, Mid North and Riverland in South Australia.
With instruction and practical training in line with legal, workplace and community considerations, Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines and other Australian national peak clinical bodies, this Childcare First Aid Course teaches the skills and knowledge to recognise emergencies and provide immediate and effective first aid treatment to any person suffering a sudden illness or injury.
In addition, the Childcare First Aid course covers assessing the casualty, providing safety, accessing emergency services, and using resources to provide first aid, such as providing CPR and using a defibrillator, administering an adrenaline device for anaphylaxis, administering asthma medication, assisting someone choking, using appropriate immobilisation techniques for envenomation, fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains, managing casualties with non-life-threatening bleeding and shock.
What You Will Learn in the Childcare First Aid Course
In the Childcare First Aid course you will learn basic anatomy, physiology and the differences between adults, children and infants relating to CPR, the importance of the chain of survival, written and verbal reporting of incident details, reviewing incidents to improve own skills and response times, to recognise psychological impacts, and seeking help as required.

- Age Requirement:
- Generally open to participants aged 14 and older (with parental/guardian consent required for participants under 18).

Your certificate includes the following units:
- HLTAID012 - Provide First Aid in an education and care setting
- HLTAID009 - Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
- HLTAID010 - Provide basic emergency life support
- HLTAID011 - Provide First Aid
This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider
An individual undertaking this course with Allens Training Pty Ltd will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:
- Photo identification (e.g., driver’s licence, passport, or student ID).
- Physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration skills including CPR*
- To successfully complete this course, students will need to demonstrate the following language, literacy, numeracy and digital (LLND) skills during training and assessment:
- Learning: Follow instructions, ask for help, and learn from feedback.
- Reading: Read short texts like signs and step-by-step instructions.
- Writing: Write short notes or fill out a simple form.
- Oral communication: Listen carefully and speak clearly in a classroom environment.
- Numeracy: Count and use simple numbers.
- Digital Literacy: Able to use a mobile phone or basic device to read messages, follow online instructions, complete online forms or access learning resources
*Important note: In order to issue an accredited certificate, CPR must be performed on the floor with no exemptions.
Online learning: Students must have basic digital literacy skills to navigate online platforms, complete assessments, and access course materials. Before enrolment, students should assess their ability to engage in online learning. Support is available where required. The online learning program can be found in the student portal. Students must have access to a computer, smart phone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online studies and associated assessment tasks.
Delivery mode: Online with face-to-face - The online pre-course learning and theory assessment is expected to take approximately 7 hours to complete. These timeframes are estimates. Individuals with prior experience in similar training may complete the online component in less time, while those new to the subject may need more time to complete all the learning content and theory questions.
Refresher: 7 hours
Blended: 7 hours
Face-to-face: 9 hours
Online with face-to-face assessment: 1 hour
Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

Performance tasks and practical scenarios for Childcare First Aid Course:
- Perform 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult on the floor
- Demonstrate the correct use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
- Demonstrate placing a casualty into the recovery position
- Perform 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on a child on the floor
- Perform 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an infant on the floor
- Manage a child casualty with anaphylaxis
- Manage a child casualty with asthma
- Manage a choking child and infant casualty
- Manage a child casualty with non-life-threatening bleeding requiring minor wound cleaning
- Manage a child casualty with shock
- Manage a child casualty with a nosebleed
- Manage a child casualty with a fracture and dislocation
- Manage a child casualty with a sprain and strain
- Manage a child casualty with envenomation (snake/ funnel-web spider bite)
Documentation – The student must complete all documentation according to the required standard:
- Complete a first aid incident report form based on the simulated first aid scenario
Theory assessment: A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice questions.
Students are required to complete a self evaluation against the following core skills as part of the enrolment process. This will allow your trainer to understand any additional support that may be required during the course delivery and assessment.
