Electrical Safety Training for Workers Required to Work Near Live Electrical Apparatus
This Electrical Safety Awareness course provides non-electrical workers with the knowledge and skills required to work safely near powerlines and electrical apparatus.
The course covers electrical safety responsibilities, identifying electrical hazards and following safe work procedures when working around low-voltage electrical equipment.
Who should attend
- Tradespeople and Construction Personnel:
- Scaffolders, riggers, painters, roofers, and general construction site workers operating around electrical equipment or overhead cables.
- Vegetation Management and Utility Workers:
- Tree trimmers, arborists, and ground crew working near live powerlines or utility infrastructure.
- Plant and Machinery Operators:
- Crane, excavator, elevated work platform (EWP), or boom operators required to maintain Safe Approach Distances (SAD) while working near live apparatus.
- Telecommunications and Infrastructure Technicians:
- Workers setting up or maintaining cables, towers, and lines near existing electrical networks.
- Safety Observers and Spotters:
- Designated site personnel acting as safety observers for machinery and plant operating near energized powerlines.
Completing this course gives participants the skills and knowledge to work safely near electrical hazards. It also helps them understand compliance rules for safe approach distances.
The course covers safe working practices for workers, plant, tools and equipment operating near electrical infrastructure.
Through practical, real-world training, participants learn to identify electrical hazards, assess risks, and apply the right controls. This helps create a safer workplace.
Due to the high-risk nature of working around electrical infrastructure, Electrical Safety training is an important requirement for workers in industries where employees need to develop, maintain and demonstrate their electrical safety skills.
The course helps participants understand their responsibilities and apply safe work practices when working near powerlines and electrical apparatus.

This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider
An individual undertaking this course with Allens Training Pty Ltd will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:
- An official form of photo identification (e.g., driver’s licence, passport, or student ID).
- Physical fitness to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration skills including manual handling in the rescue of a mock casualty
- Protective footwear/safety shoes and comfortable/practical clothing must be provided by the student and worn during the practical sessions
Online learning: Students must have basic digital literacy skills to navigate online platforms, complete assessments, and access course materials. Before enrolment, students should assess their ability to engage in online learning. Support is available where required. The online learning program can be found in the student portal. Students must have access to a computer, smart phone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online studies and associated assessment tasks.
Delivery mode: Online with face-to-face The online pre-course learning and theory assessment is expected to take approximately 3 hours to complete. These timeframes are estimates. Individuals with prior experience in similar training may complete the online component in less time, while those new to the subject may need more time to complete all the learning content and theory questions
Refresher: 4 hours
Face-to-face: 6 hours
Online with face-to-face assessment: 1 hour
Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.
This certificate does not require renewal

Performance tasks - The assessor must observe the following performance tasks:
- Prepare to work safely on two occasions and respond to an incident
Documentation – The student must compete all documentation according to the required standard:
- Complete Risk Assessment Form
- Sign on and off a Electrical Access work permit
- Complete an Incident Report
Theory assessment: A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice questions.
Students are required to complete a self evaluation against the following core skills as part of the enrolment process. This will allow your trainer to understand any additional support that may be required during the course delivery and assessment.
